A Brief History
Worldwide Fruit has a history that brings together 3 of the marque
names in produce.
The name Worldwide Fruit was first used in 1990 when Geest
Fresh Produce was split into four autonomous units. They were known
as English Village Salads, Select Veg, Tropical Produce and Worldwide
Fruit. Worldwide Fruit were experts in imported fruit - apples,
pears, dates, kiwifruit and avocado. In 1998 Worldwide Fruit moved
into the offices on West Marsh Road.
The New Zealand Apple & Pear Board was created by in 1948 to market
all apples and pears grown in New Zealand. In 1949 this amounted
500,000 cases. The ENZA brand debuted
in 1991 by which time New Zealand was exporting 14,000,000 cases. New Zealand
has an outstanding record of producing new varieties launching Royal
Gala in 1973, Braeburn in 1985, Taylor's Gold in 1997 and Jazz in
2002. After deregulation in 2002 ENZA merged with Turners & Growers
Ltd, to create New Zealand's largest produce company.
On 3rd January 2000 Geest Worldwide Fruit merged with Enzafruit
New Zealand UK Ltd (the UK subsidiary of ENZA) forming a 50/50 joint
venture and became known as Enzafruit Worldwide Ltd. This gave the
new merged company a balanced portfolio of imported fruit.
In November 2000 Northcourt, took a 20%
interest in Enzafruit Worldwide. Northcourt were the largest supplier
of UK grown apples and pears and the organisations that merged over
the years to form Northcourt is a roll call of the UK's finest suppliers
- Homegrown Fruits, East Kent Packers, Waveney Apple Growers, Norfolk
Fruit Growers, Checkers MGA, Anglian Fruit Farmers and West Country
Top Fruit. By creating a company that merged domestic and imported
fruit the company could meet all sourcing needs of our supermarket
customers.
In November 2003 Geest divested their shareholding and Enza/Turners
&Growers and Northcourt became joint owners each having a 50% share.
The company name also changed to
Worldwide Fruit Ltd.
Step forward to today and Worldwide Fruit has an enviably strong
position in the UK marketplace.
